Outdoor Fire Pit Safety
June 30, 2021
Gather around the fire pit this summer on the Treasure Coast of Florida to create memories with friends and family. As long as you practice fire pit safety, this outdoor activity can be a great bonding experience. Follow these tips for a safe outdoor experience.
Find a Clear Area
Even a small fire produces a significant amount of heat. Flames can reach straight up or blow in the wind. Check the area around your fire for any overhanging trees or buildings that could be caught in the flames.
Always use a fire ring or other way to establish the perimeter of a fire. Lighting logs or brush in the open can quickly ignite grass and create an out-of-control fire.
Choose Chemical-Free Wood
Leftover lumber and other DIY materials may seem like a convenient alternative to purchasing or gathering firewood, but these materials contain chemicals. MDF, plywood and other composite building materials should never be burned, because they can create toxic fumes that affect your health.
Instead, choose dried wood from your property or hardwood logs designed for use in a fire pit. Softwoods burn as well, but they typically produce more smoke and sparks.
Monitor Your Fire
Unattended flames can react unpredictably. Whether you’re headed to bed or the store, to pick up more fireside treats, always leave someone responsible in charge of the fire.
In addition to a responsible watcher, every fire should have a planned extinguishing method. Here are some common steps to extinguishing a fire:
- Pour water on it to extinguish the flames
- Mix soil into the ashes with a shovel or other tool
- Continue until coals and partially burned wood is safe to touch
Consider having a fire extinguisher or alternative method available in case you run out of water or the fire gets out of control. Don’t be afraid to contact your local fire department if it escalates out of your control.
Stay a Safe Distance Away
A fire pit can feel like a great way to warm yourself up as you sit outside and enjoy the Treasure Coast late at night. Sitting too close to the flames, unfortunately, can cause your chair, clothing, or other items to ignite.
Stay a safe distance from any flames and consider using a fire pit screen. This prevents embers from floating through the air towards you or nearby flammable objects.
Protect Your Indoor Air Quality With Fire Pit Safety
Stay safe, indoors and out, with proper safety steps and indoor air quality measures. After a late-night around the fire, you may bring soot and the smell of smoke into your home. Schedule a service with One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning of Treasure Coast to discuss ways to filter out soot and odor with a high-quality HVAC system.
