Alleviate Allergies By Improving Your Indoor Air Quality
July 10, 2018
Allergies are a hassle to deal with any time of year, but especially when mold, pollen, and dust are high. You may think that staying indoors is the best thing to do under the circumstances, but the truth is that your home may also be a source of the very allergens you are trying to avoid. Just as important as safeguarding yourself from external allergen exposure is protecting yourself from internal ones by improving the air quality inside your home.
Service Your HVAC System
While some allergens are more prevalent outside, they may be entering your home through a poorly maintained or old HVAC system. Even if yours is new, it needs routine cleaning and service to ensure it works effectively and doesn’t turn into a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and other irritants. Filters need regular replacement or they can’t trap pollutants so you don’t breathe them in. You may also want to consider installing a HEPA filter if you don’t already have one.
Eliminate Allergen Magnets
Some surfaces attract and retain allergens more than others. These include:
- Carpeting
- Fabric furniture
- Bedding and mattresses
- Stuffed animals
- Fake plants
- Damp areas
Wood flooring may be a better option for those with allergies. Wash all fabrics, including curtains, regularly in hot water and keep mattresses in anti-allergen covers. Ventilate damp areas to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Dust, sweep, vacuum, and mop consistently to avoid buildup. Keeping the house clean will deter allergy-causing pests as well.
As for pets, you may do well with a hypoallergenic breed, need to stick with less triggering animals, or not have any at all. If you have a furry friend, remember to wash your pet’s items frequently, too.
