Dry Air? Consider Installing a Whole House Humidifier
February 15, 2019
Do you have chapped lips and dry, itchy skin? Are you plagued with congestion, a sore, dry throat – perhaps even nosebleeds? This may be the result of dry indoor air. If you're also experiencing increased static electricity in your home, this may be a sign that you need more indoor moisture. Happily, there's an effective solution to combat this arid, uncomfortable environment – a whole house humidifier.
How Does a Whole House Humidifier Work?
A whole house humidifier controls the humidity throughout your home by putting water vapor into the air. HVAC pros install the humidifier directly into your ductwork and connect it to a water supply line. The humidifier relies on a steaming system, a rotating drum, or a humidifier pad to increase the amount of moisture in the air. This equipment operates as either a bypass humidifier, a fan-powered humidifier, or a steaming system.
Because a whole house humidifier is connected to your HVAC system, it's able to humidify much of the heated, dry air that your furnace cycles through your house. In a bypass or fan-powered humidifier, some of that air enters the humidifier and is misted with the water inside. This raises the moisture levels in the air that passes through the humidifier and mixes with the rest of the heated air cycling through your system. In this way, it raises the humidity of all the air flowing through your home.
A steam humidifier pumps steam into the air when it detects low moisture. Your furnace then circulates this humidified air throughout your house.
Benefits of a Whole House Humidifier
Minimizing the effects of dry air indoors improves more than just your comfort level. It can also minimize your exposure to illness and help protect your furnishings. Some advantages of a whole house humidifier include:
- Better breathing conditions for asthma, sinusitis, and bronchitis sufferers
- Lessens spread of viruses and bacteria
- Reduced discomfort of dry, itchy skin and eyes
- Minimized impact of dry air on your wooden frame and fixtures – shifting door jambs, cracking and creaking floorboards, and gaps in your ceiling and walls
- Avoided damage, like warping, to musical instruments, artwork, books, and other home furnishings that are vulnerable to the effects of dry air
- Fewer static shocks
