Spring HVAC Maintenance Tips
February 15, 2022
You’re probably thinking that spring can’t come soon enough. Even though it’s still chilly outside, plan for its arrival by getting all those pesky spring chores out of the way. These spring HVAC maintenance tips help you prepare for warmer days, while ensuring that things go smoothly during the transition to summer.
Cool Weather Tasks
Don’t waste the upcoming spring weekends on household maintenance chores. As soon as the weather breaks, knock out a few tasks so your future weekends are free.
Some tasks you can do now include:
Change the air filter
Your HVAC filter is probably full of debris from the winter. With more indoor time, winter is hardest on your filter. Between pets and people, your air filters become chockfull of dust and dander, including hair and skin cells and other unpleasant obstructions.
Clean up the condensing unit
Your outdoor unit works more efficiently if you remove any vegetation from around the HVAC pad. Winter may have done most of the work for you already, but you can ensure it stays clear by pulling up any weeds growing nearby and cutting back any hedges or overhanging branches.
Remove any leaves or blown debris with a broom and use a garden hose or vacuum to clean the coils of dirt.
Inspect the unit for bent fins and repair them yourself or make a note for your AC tech to fix the problem.
Duct cleaning
It’s also time to schedule your duct cleaning. Along with all that dust and hair in your filter, there is likely to be a buildup of the same in your duct system. If your duct run is through attic spaces, note that these are often cold-weather havens for unwanted wildlife visitors. You certainly do not want debris from these blowing around your home.
Warm Weather Tasks
Once the outside air warms to a more comfortable temperature, you should complete your seasonal maintenance.
Adjust thermostat settings
While 68 degrees Fahrenheit feels toasty in the winter, it’s a poor choice for your air conditioning. Make sure that you adjust the temperature setting when turning the heat off and the air conditioner on.
Even better, consider upgrading to a Smart thermostat. For carefree and comfortable climate control, take a look at features offered by high-tech thermostats. These take the worry about of thermostat settings while saving you money.
Test your AC
If there’s a problem with your air conditioning, you’ll want to know about it before you need it. Spring is the perfect time to test your AC by turning it on and checking the airflow at the vents. This way, you’ll schedule professional repair before it becomes uncomfortably hot outside.
