What to do If My HVAC System Has Flooded?
September 30, 2020
It’s something that could happen to anyone—regardless of location. A heavy storm or hurricane has the potential to flood your HVAC unit and you will need an expert to assess your system.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after HVAC systems have been damaged by flood waters, “these systems may contain substantial amounts of dirt and debris and may also become contaminated with various types of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi.”
They also state that in addition to water damage, “moisture can collect in HVAC units components that were not submerged (such as air supply ducts above the water line) and can promote the growth of microorganisms. Therefore, all components of the HVAC unit that were contaminated with flood water or moisture should be thoroughly inspected, cleaned of dirt and debris, and disinfected by a qualified professional.”
It’s important to follow the recommended process to avoid further damage or injury.
Here are some steps to take if any part of your HVAC system has been flooded with water:
- First and foremost, do not return back to your home until it is safe. Let the water recede before reentering because the potential for hazard or injury is presemt.
- Once you’re able to return back to your home, shut off the electricity to your HVAC system. You’ll want to leave this off until a professional technician arrives.
- An HVAC technician will inspect all parts of your system to determine the severity of damage and what will need to be replaced. In many cases, HVAC system replacement is the best option. However, this can allow you to choose a new, more energy efficient system and you can also move the unit to a different location in your home.
- Once repairs have been made in your home, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. You can do things like put your air conditioner on risers to avoid flood damage in the future. Consult with your HVAC technician to discuss options.
