You have certain expectations for your air conditioning system. Most of all, you expect cool air when you need it. During the summer, as temperatures begin to soar, a comfortable air-conditioned home is essential.

Sometimes, you come home from a long day only to discover your air conditioner is blowing warm air. You’ll likely need to call an HVAC technician to perform prompt air conditioning repairs or maintenance. Depending on the issue, you could have your air conditioner up and running in just one afternoon. In most cases, the repairs are fairly inexpensive, too.

Troubleshooting Your Air Conditioner

An air conditioning system may encounter a few common issues that cause warm air. These issues range from relatively simple fixes to more extensive repairs. Let’s start with the simple things to troubleshoot.

  • Thermostat Settings – Begin by checking your thermostat. Be sure the system is set to “cool” and the fan is on “auto.” Also, make sure the temperature setting is at least five degrees below the room temperature reading on the thermostat. Often, homeowners do not realize when someone bumps the thermostat or when the battery needs changing.
  • Dirty Condenser – A dirty condenser unit, which is the outside unit of the air conditioning system, may occasionally accumulate dirt and debris. If you spot a blockage, remove it. It’s important to provide regular air conditioning maintenance for both indoor and outdoor units.
  • Air Filter – A dirty air filter alone will not cause your system to blow warm air. It will, however, exacerbate other issues within the air conditioner. A clean air filter will prevent dust, dirt, and debris from clogging the inner parts on your system. Your best bet is to change the filter once per month.

  • Refrigerant Leak – A refrigerant leak or low refrigerant levels can cause an air conditioner to blow warm air. You will require an expert to diagnose and repair the issue. If you’re low on refrigerant, it’s likely because you have a leak. The refrigerant in an air conditioning system doesn’t run out as a car’s gas tank does.
  • Air Ducts – A leak or hole in the air duct can mess with the entire system’s cooling process. If the ducts are hidden behind walls or in the attic, you’ll need a technician to closely examine the system and perform necessary repairs.
