Steer Clear of These AC Habits When It’s Hot Outside
May 17, 2018
As much as everyone would love to adjust their thermostat frequently, summer isn’t a great time to keep your indoor temperatures low. Cranking up the AC will land you with a heavy electricity bill. To keep your costs low and your home cool, try to avoid falling prey to these three habits that are shared by many homeowners.
Leaving Doors Open
There’s no reason to cool down the entire neighborhood when it’s 90 degrees outside. Leaving your front or back door open during the summer is a surefire way to make your AC unit work overtime, as it tries to keep your home’s temperature comfortable. You should also avoid opening windows, and seal up any cracks that are letting your precious cold air escape.
Opening the Blinds During the Day
Many people love to let the light in during the morning and afternoon hours, but unfortunately, that’s not a luxury you should indulge in when it’s hot outside. The yellow light that streams in through open blinds can cause your home to heat up much faster than it would if you kept the blinds closed. Whenever you’re at work or out running errands, keep curtains and blinds closed so that everything stays nice and cool.
Ignoring Your Fan
Instead of dashing to adjust the thermostat when your home feels toasty, flip on your ceiling fan. Sometimes just getting the air moving inside is enough to keep you from cranking the AC, and it’s a much cheaper way to cool down.
