How to Know If Your Furnace Needs Repair or Replacement
March 5, 2015
Unless you’re a trained professional, it is quite difficult to know if your furnace needs some attention (unless, of course, it has completely stopped working!). But before failing completely, a furnace will usually give out some warning signs that it may need some attention.
Unusual Noises
Your furnace has many mechanical components inside it. It only takes one to fail (or even start to fail) for it to create some sort of unusual noise. To be clear, when we say “unusual,” we mean a noise that it ordinarily wouldn’t make, not some sort of ’70s disco-funk. While noise may not be a definite sign of failure, it is always worth investigating.
Smells or Smoke
Normally, you wouldn’t expect your furnace to produce any sort of smell or smoke. If it does, you should shut it off as soon as you can, so long as you don’t put yourself in danger. An expert technician will be able to diagnose exactly what has happened. We would always advise not using your system until it has been (at least) inspected by an expert.
Cool Air
If you know that your system and thermostat are demanding warmth but your furnace only seems to be supplying cool or room temperature air, that is a sure sign of a failing furnace. The reasons for cool air can be numerous. Unless you know your furnace inside out, a call to a professional furnace technician is your only choice.
