What Are Condenser Coils, Anyway?

In a nutshell, your air conditioner’s condenser coil removes hot air from your home and takes it outside. Because it has to move a great deal of air, it’s important that the coil is as clean as possible. Dirty condenser coils can’t move as much air. As a result, your air conditioner will have to work too hard and its lifespan will be shorter.

How to Clean Condenser Coils

  • First, make sure your outdoor unit has three feet of clearance on all sides so that it isn’t obstructed by plants or debris.
  • Turn off the power to the unit.
  • Clean the fins with a soft brush to clear lint and grass. Brush in the same direction as the slots go so that you can get between the fins. It will be easier if you first remove the guard grill.
  • Put on some rubber gloves and spray coil cleaner on the component. After about 10 minutes, use a gentle water spray to flush.
  • If you see any fins that are bent, use a fin comb or a flat screwdriver to straighten them. It’s extremely important that you are as gentle as possible so that you don’t damage the fins.
  • Turn the power back on and you’re done.
