Taking Stock of How Your Furnace Performed During Winter
April 18, 2014
Even though we still have some cold days left before spring really gets going in the Minneapolis area, we can at least see the light at the end of the tunnel. Before your attention turns to basking in the warm days to come, you should probably take a look back at how your furnace performed during our recently completed winter. If the results are mixed, or if you had some problems, then you might want to think about the steps you can take to avoid having to go through similar problems next winter.
Signs You May Need a Replacement
Even if you were able to get through heating season without having to call an expert to come out and look at your furnace, that doesn’t automatically mean that the unit operated at peak efficiency. If you experienced any of the following issues, you may want to make a note to have your furnace checked.
- Shutting off – If your furnace shut down and needed to be restarted, or you had trouble restarting it, then you could have a problem with your thermostat.
- Your heating bills were too high – If you can’t explain why it seemed to cost more for heating this winter, there is a chance your furnace has lost a great deal of its efficiency. You should have it thoroughly checked before the next heating season so that you can make sure there are no major issues.
- You noticed a yellow flame – The pilot light in your furnace should be blue rather than yellow. If it is yellow, you need to have it checked immediately.
