Mini Split AC Means No Windows Needed
Considering a window unit? Mini Split Air Conditioners are a better choice. Window units only chill the air. Mini Split Air Conditioners, on the other hand, dehumidify just like traditional ducted systems.
Window units, meanwhile, are an eyesore. Because they never seal properly, they can cost you up to 30% in energy loss. Mini Split Air Conditioners mount right on your wall. They’re connected to the outside unit via a single umbilical line. That means they do not rely on ductwork or windows to operate.
Mini Split AC: The smart choice for small rooms
Mini Split Air Conditioners are the smart choice for those small areas. They’re compact, cost-efficient, and simple to use. You get cooling where you want it, when you want it, with amazing efficiency–up to 22 SEER.

Mini Split AC—How does it work?
A ductless mini-split air conditioning system is relatively easy to install, and a great option for homes not already fitted with ducts. Sometimes, older homes don’t have space in the walls for ducts and need an alternative cooling option. As we already mentioned, window units sometimes don’t provide a proper seal, aren’t very efficient, and can be disruptively loud to the environment. Ductless mini-split air conditioning systems can fit in just about any home, and they also offer a few benefits over traditional HVAC and window air conditioning systems.
Like a traditional air conditioner, the compressor/condenser is located outside near the home. The air handlers are placed around the home where the homeowner needs them most or where they provide the most efficient cooling. They can go in attics, basements, sunrooms, recent additions, or anywhere in the home you need cooler air.
The air handlers pull in warm air from the room, cool it with a refrigerant line, and blow the cool air back into the room itself. The heat absorbed from the refrigerant is transferred to the outdoor compressor/condenser and released into the atmosphere. Since the compressor/condenser is located outdoors, using this type of air conditioning system is just as quiet as a traditional HVAC system and much quieter than a window unit.
Some mini-split designs allow for just a single air handler to be hooked up to its own compressor/condenser outside, while others allow for multiple air handlers to hook up to a single compressor/condenser. With multiple outdoor units connected to individual air handlers, a homeowner is able to individually adjust each indoor unit to a room’s specifications with their individual thermostats. This allows for more precise zone climate control. If there are some family members who like their environments really cool while others prefer warmer, everyone’s preferences can be met using this design.
Multi-split systems, on the other hand, switch on all indoor units when the thermostat is set to a lower temperature, cooling every room at the same time. Homeowners who prefer the whole home at the same temperature, or who don’t have room outside for multiple compressor/condensers, may choose this option over individual zone control.
Mini Split AC Maintenance
Just like traditional HVAC systems, ductless mini-split systems also require yearly maintenance to uphold efficiency over their lifespans. Homeowners can check and replace filters throughout the year, but a professional may be required to help clean hard to reach areas like the fan and repair any worn or damaged internal parts.
The coils are where the heat transfer takes place, so it is essential that they stay clear of dust and debris. Even a light layer of dust can significantly reduce efficiency, meaning higher energy bills for you. A professional technician will clean the coils as part of their service visit.
Neglecting maintenance on a mini-split air conditioning system not only reduces efficiency and lifespan of the unit, but it can also be harmful to your health. Bacteria and mold may start to grow inside your unit without proper cleanings. For those with dust and mold allergens, this can be a real problem! Remember to take care of your air conditioning unit, and it will take care of you.
With proper maintenance, mini-split systems can last up to 20 years, about the same as traditional HVAC systems.
