Cooling Season and Dehumidification
April 26, 2017
As we move into what is bound to be another warm spring season, it’s important to start thinking about the health and performance of your cooling system. Humidity is getting higher and higher every year causing ducts and supply registers in the ceiling or on the walls of your home to sweat more than in past years. This “sweat” can lead to structural damage to your cooling system and your home, leading to exceedingly expensive repairs and replacements.
In our area, we’re all too familiar with the “sticky” feeling that excessive moisture in the air can cause. The rooms of your home begin to smell musty as indoor condensation appears on the glass surfaces in your home. You feel sweaty or clammy no matter what temperature you set your thermostat to, and the additional moisture can lead to the sweating of your air conditioning system, as well as warping or rotting of wood in your home. High humidity can also attract pests into your home and allow mold and mildew to grow, which can, in turn, lead to problems with allergy or asthma sufferers.
Despite what some people may think, your air conditioner is designed to control temperature but not humidity. An additional dehumidification system within your home is required in order to optimize comfort and decrease excessive moisture in the summer.
The best way to protect your home and HVAC system is through dehumidification during the warmer months ahead via a central dehumidification system. A dehumidifier helps to keep your cooling system running efficiently, as it reduces the breakdown of ducts and equipment that otherwise condensate in high levels of moisture. For those concerned about the cost of installing a central dehumidification system, reducing this moisture means your cooling system doesn’t need to work as hard, which in turn leads to less wear and wear and fewer repairs and replacements in the future, and a longer-lasting and effective system in your home. In addition to protecting your home, dehumidification has many other benefits; not only will dehumidifying your home during the cooler season lead to greater comfort this spring and summer, a decrease in moisture in your home will also improve your indoor air quality. Like your cooling system, a central dehumidification system runs quietly in the background of your home, reducing musty odors and making your home less susceptible to allergens such as dust mites, mold, and mildew. Maybe most importantly, you’ll be surprised to find how much more comfortable your home is when humidity is brought to a normal level.
If you’re noticing water stains on the walls or ceilings of your home, smelling mildew in air-conditioned areas or condensation on windows and mirrors, it’s likely that your home is in need of dehumidification.
