4 Signs of a Dirty AC Filter
June 9, 2020
If some rooms in your home are hotter than others, your Air Conditioner may be cooling unevenly.
It could be due to a dirty A/C filter!
This time of year we get lots of calls about air conditioning systems not cooling properly. Now, if you experience this, a good place to begin is to simply check your filters.
Here are some tips that could be signs of a dirty air filter that needs changing:
1. Uneven temperatures. Even if you notice simple or slight changes in the temperatures throughout your home, it is a good idea to check your filters. Dirt or debris can build up on them and can make it harder for air flow to get to all parts of your house equally.
2. Higher utility bill: If your electricity bill starts to creep higher, it can sometimes be difficult to determine the cause. A good place to start is by checking your air filter. A dirty filter will cause the cooling system to work hard, using more energy.
3. Increased allergies: Allergens such as dust, pollen, and pet dander all will typically cling to your air filter. But when the filter becomes saturated, these pollutants get circulated in the air throughout your home. As a result, you’ll suffer the misery of allergy attacks more frequently.
4. Dust near air vents: Another common sign of a dirty air filter is finding dust on surfaces and furniture near the vents as opposed to surfaces farther away from the vents. If the surfaces nearest the vents are dustier while others appear cleaner, it’s a sure sign that your air filter needs replacing.
Bottom line: a dirty filter makes your system have to work harder to cool your home, which eventually could lead to the need for repair or early replacement.
