Earth Day Energy Conservation Tips
April 2, 2013
Did you know that in 1974, only 48% of newly built single-family homes had air-conditioning? Fast forward to 2010, and the percentage had increased to 88%.It’s no secret we’re using more energy today than we were 40 years ago, but there are still simple things we can do to help reduce the effect our energy consumption has on our planet.
One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning® of Midland Park wants to make it possible for every American to do their part to conserve energy, and in honor of Earth Day (April 22) we’ve compiled a list of tips to do so. (Not to mention, conserving energy with these tricks will cut utility bills!)
Consider the following:
- Most of the electricity in your home is used by the heating and AC system, and water heating. Make sure your heating and cooling systems are running efficiently, and don’t forget to check your central systems twice a year.Be mindful of any AC repairs or furnace repairs you need to make.
- By installing a programmable thermostat, you can set pre-determined temperature levels that help save energy and improve your comfort (a must in the summertime!). When used properly, this device can save residents about $150 annually.
- A duct system that is properly sealed can make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient. Make sure that the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls and ceiling. These are common locations to find leaks and disconnected ductwork that could be wasting energy and your money.
- Consider investing in a high-SEER air conditioning unit before this summer. The Federal government developed an ENERGY STAR program for high-efficiency central air conditioning systems that, in order to qualify, must have a SEER of at least 14. These units save energy and money, and allow buyers to claim a tax deduction on the purchase.
