Even though it’s October, you’re still wondering, “What temperature should I set my AC?” And it’s not just because it’s still hot outside. It’s also still humid.
October is the most humid month of the year in Miami. High temperatures average into the high 80s. Between the warm outdoor air and the humidity, South Floridians use their air conditioning nearly all year long.
What Temperature Should I Set My AC for Savings?
We all have different priorities when it comes to temperature settings. But if you need to save on bills, the State of Florida recommends setting your AC thermostat at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. According to public service announcements, the difference between 70 and 78 could double your electric bill.
The U.S. Department of Energy also recommends adjusting that temperature up for hours when you’re away or sleeping.
What Temperature Should I Set My AC for Humidity Control?
In Florida, limiting humidity in the home is half the battle. High humidity makes it harder for our perspiration to evaporate, which means it feels so much hotter when the humidity is high.
The Florida Power and Light website recommends running your AC at 80 when you’re away and 77 when you’re home to prevent mold and mildew growth.
What Temperature Should I Set My AC for Pets?
If you have pets at home, you may need to rethink your thermostat settings. The right temperature setting for pets depends on their species and their health.
Dogs are comfortable at the same settings that their people are —75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re turning up the thermostat when you’re out of the house, don’t turn it up above 82, though.
Cats have a greater tolerance to heat than dogs. This is why you’ll often find them sitting on heat-generating objects, like your lap or your laptop. With access to plenty of fresh water, your cat is fine up to 85 or 88 degrees.
Pet birds are usually tropical varieties, so can tolerate a thermostat setting up to 85 degrees. Pet rabbits, however, should be kept below 80 degrees if little Thumper is waiting for you at home.
What Temperature Should I Set My AC for Computer Equipment?
If you keep a lot of electronics equipment running constantly, you may have read you should keep the environment very cool. However, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), changed their recommendations for IT equipment in 2016.
Previously, the organization recommended a top temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Currently, that recommendation is a high of 81 degrees F, so your computer and other electronics should be just fine if you set your AC for 78 to 80 degrees.
