Why Should I Use a Ductless Mini Split?
January 23, 2017
The winter season is very mild in this part of the country, while the summer seems to stretch out for most of the year. The summer is actually the same length as anywhere else, of course. It just so happens that much of spring and fall feels like summer in the cooler parts of the country. Because of this, you are definitely going to be using your air conditioner far more than your home heating system.
That isn’t to say that your heater doesn’t play an important role in your home, though. Temperatures can and will drop below a comfortable level in the winter, as we’re seeing right now. When the nights get chilly, you’ll be glad for having a great heating system in place. We recommend that you consider the use of a ductless mini split in Miami, FL.
What Is a Ductless Mini Split?
A ductless mini split is a heat pump. If you’ve visited this blog before, you’ve certainly seen us discuss the benefits of heat pumps previously. Unlike the traditional heat pump, a ductless mini split does not use ductwork in its operation.
How Do Ductless Heat Pumps Work?
Ductless heat pumps share much in common with regular air source heat pumps. In the summer, they act like a heat pump or central air conditioning system, removing the heat from the air in the home with the evaporation of refrigerant. That heat is then vented outdoors as the refrigerant is condensed. In the winter, like other air source heat pumps, they reverse this operation. Heat is drawn from the air outside, the warm refrigerant is run through the compressor, and the heat from that refrigerant is then used to heat the air inside the home.
What Sets Ductless Systems Apart, Then?
While the basic heat transfer process of a ductless mini split shares much in common with these other systems, the elimination of ductwork from the air distribution process truly sets the ductless heat pump apart. Rather than using a central ductwork system in order to force air throughout the entire home, a ductless mini split uses multiple wall-mounted blowers to do so. These blowers may sometimes be installed in the ceiling, or recessed into the structure of the home.
A typical ductless mini split system will accommodate up to four blowers. These blowers are controlled independently of one another. Each is tasked with regulating the temperature in the room/area in which it is installed. This allows for some great benefits to the homeowner.
Benefits of Using a Ductless Mini Split
Some of the benefits of using a ductless mini split are the same as using any heat pump. These include:
- Year round comfort with the use of just one system.
- Reduced energy consumption.
- Very efficient heating.
However, the use of the ductless distribution system allows for a few more, unique benefits. These include:
- The elimination of energy loss via duct leaks.
- Protected indoor air quality, as there is no ductwork to distribute pollutants throughout the house.
- Better comfort, as you can maintain different temperatures in each different “zone” of the house thanks to the independent blowers.
