Should I Replace My Air Ducts?
February 6, 2017
While ductless mini splits have certainly gained a lot of popularity over the years, most homeowners are still using air ducts in order to distribute cooled air throughout their homes (or heated air, for those rare instances in which we need to run the furnace). Doing so definitely has its advantages. The practice allows for the prompt and effective cooling of one’s home, and can also be quite efficient. This is only the case, of course, when the air ducts are in great shape.
Like any other part of an HVAC system, it is very possible that you will encounter problems with your air ducts at some point. If and when you do, repairs may be possible to get those ducts back on track. In certain instances, however, duct replacement in Miami, FL may be necessary. We can evaluate your air ducts to determine the best course of action.
Signs of Trouble
When your air conditioner breaks down entirely or a heater is blowing cold air, the problem is very obvious. This isn’t really the case with damaged air ducts. Your system will still be heating or cooling your home, so you may not notice the problem immediately. There are symptoms to look out for, however, and they include the following.
- Uneven temperatures throughout the house.
- Increased heating/cooling costs.
- A drop in indoor air quality.
- Hissing sounds.
When Are Repairs Not Enough?
Sealing air ducts is not something that you can do on your own. If you do have damaged ductwork, though, a professional HVAC technician may be able to seal and patch them successfully. This won’t always be the case, however. There are plenty of instances in which full duct replacement is advisable.
If, for instance, there are serious issues with extensive holes and tears in your ductwork due to corrosion, pests, or other issues, then replacing the ductwork may make more sense in order to boost efficiency and performance quality in the long run. If you have an older home, it is also possible that outdated materials will warrant the replacement of air ducts, just like they would with a plumbing system.
There is one other situation in which the ducts themselves may be in fine shape, but still merit replacing. That is if the air ducts were not well-installed in the first place. If your ducts are not of an appropriate size for your system and its needs, or if your ductwork is not laid out in a thoughtful manner conducive to the heating and cooling of your home, then replacement may be necessary.
Duct Replacement Demands a Professional Touch
There are plenty of jobs that you can handle on your own around the house. Replacing your air ducts is not among them, though. Accessing the ductwork can be difficult. In fact, certain ducts may be easier to replace than to get in and repair. Oftentimes, we’ll come across ductwork that has been damaged during another project in the house.
