AC Pro Tip: Keep Your Coils Clean
September 19, 2016
When we talk about air conditioning here in Florida, we are not talking about an occasional luxury. We are talking about a very necessary part of daily life, for the majority of the year. If you want your air conditioner to function as effectively and efficiently as possible, scheduling routine air conditioning maintenance in Miami, FL is an absolute must.
In addition to routine air conditioning maintenance, though, it may be necessary to schedule a coil cleaning every now and then. Why? Because a dirty evaporator coil is not only going to drag down the overall performance quality of your home cooling system, but may also leave you paying more for that lesser performance!
What Is the Evaporator Coil? Why Keep It Clean?
When you run your air conditioning system, that system is not generating cool air out of nothing. Instead, it draws in warm air from throughout your home. It then absorbs heat from that air, cooling it before redistributing it throughout your home. The evaporator coil is integral to this process.
This coil is one of the stops in the refrigerant cycle and is where, appropriately enough, refrigerant evaporates. It does so as the cool refrigerant absorbs heat from the air surrounding the evaporator coil. This is why it is so important that this coil is kept clean.
If the evaporator coil is covered with dust, dirt, and other such contaminants, its heat absorption abilities are compromised. That means that your air conditioner is going to have a tougher time cooling the air. The coil can get too cold, causing condensation to freeze on it, and that ice will only further insulate the coil. This negatively affects system performance, and can put a lot of strain on your compressor. Higher cooling costs and even more frequent repair needs or a shortened lifespan may result.
