Air-source heat pumps, which exchange heat with the air outside, are very popular. More and more homeowners these days are interested in geothermal heating and cooling systems, though, or “ground-source heat pumps”. This is unsurprising, give the many great benefits that they have to offer.
How Does Geothermal Technology Work, and What Are Its Benefits?
A geothermal heating and cooling system does use much the same heat pump technology that traditional air-source heat pumps utilize. The major difference is that a geothermal heat pump exchanges heat with the ground, rather than the air. This is itself something of a benefit.
When you get a few feet below the ground, the temperature is pretty constant. That means that your geothermal system won’t have to compete with fluctuating temperatures in the air. Granted, an air-source heat pump isn’t going to have to contend with freezing air temperatures around here. However, our outside air is very hot, and that means that, during the cooling season, a geothermal system can easily disperse heat into the cooler environment of the ground. You are not forcing heat into already hot air.
Geothermal systems offer not only great efficiency, but great longevity as well. A major component of the system is the geothermal loop. This buried system of tubing circulates the heat transfer liquid through the ground. It requires no real maintenance to speak of, and can last for decades. With routine maintenance of the above-ground components, you can count on your geothermal system for years to come.
