How to Tell You Need Your Heater Replaced
The signs for a heater repair and a heater replacement can be similar: no or uneven hot air, strange sounds and smells, a higher energy bill, and more. So how do you know when it’s time to say goodbye instead of scheduling another repair?
Opt for a heater replacement if your heater:
- Is 10 to 15 years old, or more.
- Frequently needs repairs.
- Will cost more to repair than replace.
- Heats inefficiently and you want an updated system.
- Is gas-powered and you're ready to lower your home’s carbon footprint and take advantage of federal incentives for a heat pump.

Heating Las Vegas Homes: FAQs
Does it get cold in Las Vegas?
Yes. Even in summer, there’s a drastic difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows, due to the desert climate. In winter, the temperatures in the city regularly drop into the 20s and 30s. The record low temperature in Las Vegas is 8°F, recorded twice in 1937. While you’re not likely to see temps that low, it’s still good to be prepared.
How do I know when to turn on the heat in Las Vegas?
You can, of course, turn on the heat whenever you get cold! Typically, it’s recommended to set the heat to turn on when the temperature inside reaches 64°F or below. You may want to turn the heat on a little earlier if you have children or elderly or sick family members in your household.
In Las Vegas, the heat will usually kick on at night starting in September. In the daytime, you probably won’t need heating regularly until late October or November.
How are homes heated in Nevada?
There are a variety of common heating systems across the state and in Las Vegas specifically. Over half of the homes in the state used gas-powered heating in 2021, usually a central furnace, with electricity coming in second at just over a third of homes. While furnaces are the most common heaters in homes, heat pumps are becoming more popular, especially since they come with federal incentives. They’re also highly efficient, reduce your home’s carbon footprint, and double as your air conditioner.
