What You Need to Know About Refrigerant Leaks
April 25, 2017
If your air conditioner isn’t effectively cooling your home, it may be low on refrigerant. But how can this be? Your system isn’t even that old!
“In theory, the refrigerant charge in air conditioners/heat pumps should never need adjusting.” – Todd Kletz
Similar to a refrigerator, your air conditioner cools air that circulates through the unit. The difference is that the refrigerant redistributes throughout the home within 150-200 pieces of pipe, elbows and fittings all soldered together.
Due to the number of joints and the pressure under which the system operates, it is fairly common for refrigerant leaks to develop. They can result from poor installation, vibration, stress over time, effects from weather, or other chemical reactions.
If you’re experiencing this issue for the first time and your system is in fact low on refrigerant, we will conduct a thorough leak search and recommend a system recharge. If it is evident that a major leak is present, simply recharging the system will not fix the issue, as it will continue to occur until we fix the leak or replace the system.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to guarantee that additional leaks will not develop.
In addition, there are no ways to prevent other leaks from occurring. To keep your home comfort system as factory fresh as possible, we recommend having one of our trusted technicians perform routine maintenance annually.
