Choosing a High Efficiency Air Conditioner
January 10, 2019
As reliable as your old cooling system may have been for the last several years, unfortunately the time will come that you’ll need a new one. When it does, you want to make sure you make the right decision. One of the best ways to get the most out of your investment is choosing a high efficiency air conditioner. There is even a chance that your new system will more than pay for itself in the long run through savings on your energy bill each month.
Why a High-Efficiency Air Conditioner is Important
More than likely, the unit that is in your home is at least 10-15 years old. Many systems can even last 20 years or more. Today’s models, however, consume energy in a much “smarter” way than their predecessors. A high efficiency air conditioner has a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of at least 13, whereas the unit you have in your home would probably be SEER rated at around 8-10. Even a new unit on the lower end of the SEER rating spectrum can wind up saving you up to 40 percent on your monthly cooling bill. When you multiply that by the number of months you’ll be using that new system, you can see why the savings could be substantial. It’s important to note, however, that the higher the SEER rating the more expensive the unit will be.
It’s also important that you choose the right size of high-efficiency air conditioner for your needs. If it is too small, it obviously won’t be able to do a good enough job of cooling your home. It will have to work too hard and its lifespan will be greatly reduced as a result. However, a system that is too large will cycle one and off too often. This will also put the unit under a great deal of strain. In addition, an over-sized unit will not do a proper job of removing humidity from your home.
