As it starts to heat up with summer approaching, central air conditioner problems start occurring. You try to turn on your air conditioning system and nothing happens. Before you panic and call the technician, there are a few things you can check that may fix the problem.

  1. Check the thermostat and make sure it is set to “cool.” If it is set to heat instead of cool, then your air conditioner only can’t turn on. Once it is set to “cool”, lower the thermostat to at least 5 degrees below the current temperature and see if your unit turns on.
  2. Check the electrical and make sure the problem is not a tripped breaker. Disconnect boxes can have a manual switch or fuses that may have blown. If you are going to check fuses, make sure the power is turned off before inspecting the fuses.
  3. Check the condensate drain line. Air conditioners work to create condensation moisture which needs to be drained. If the condensate line becomes plugged, then there is a safety switch that shuts off your air conditioner.
  4. Check outdoor unit’s reset button. Press the reset button and see if your outdoor unit turns back on.
