How to Tune up Your Air Conditioner
October 22, 2013
Tuning up your air conditioner allows it to work more efficiently. This reduces your overall costs and helps to improve the comfort level you have in your home. Aside from calling Cullins One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning® for an annual inspection, there are simple, but highly effective steps homeowners can take to tune up their air conditioner and furnace, to improve efficiency.
Change Your Filter
The single most important step you can take is to clean the air filter. Change it at least one time every three months, more frequently during heavy use seasons. A clean filter allows air to be pushed through the system easier, reducing the workload of the furnace or air conditioner significantly.
Maintain Your Equipment
A trained eye is always best for an actual tune up of the motor and fans, but a homeowner's visual inspection will help spot potential problems. Frayed wires, for example, are a common problem due to pests getting into the area and chewing on the machinery. Also, ensure there is no condensation buildup. If the motor does not sound like it is running smoothly, talk to a professional about the potential problems.
Check Your Thermostat
Replacing thermostats is easy to do and one of the best ways to control your cooling costs. A programmable thermostat allows you to have more control over the temperature in your home when you are not at home or sleeping. This is an excellent way to curb the cooling of a home when un-occupied.
Clean the Ducts
Again, this can be a job best left to the pros, but even cleaning the registers and outlets can make a big difference. Most air conditioners also have exterior vents and fans. Invest the time in removing debris, dust, and any other buildup in these areas. Doing so allows air to flow freely and reduces the overall work of the system.
Know When to Upgrade
You will need to do so from time to time as a homeowner. New, ENERGY STAR products are highly efficient and do a better job of cooling the home to a pleasant level. Upgrade when it costs more to manage your current system than it is worth.
Most importantly, Cullins One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning® is happy to come out as soon as you notice a problem or for your annual inspection.
