5 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality
September 23, 2015
Poor air quality is more than just a nuisance—it can also be a legitimate health hazard to you and your family. If you want to provide a safe, healthy place for both you and your loved ones, here are five ways you can improve your home’s air quality.
1. Change Your Air Filter
When was the last time you changed the air filter in your air conditioning system? Air filters work to stop dander, dirt, dust, and all of the other nasty pollutants from being dispersed throughout your home—but over time, the air filter will accumulate too many pollutants and will need to be changed. When a dirty air filter is left unchanged, your air conditioning system has to work harder to provide the same cooling comfort. This not only puts unnecessary wear and tear on your system, but it promotes poor indoor air quality too.
2. Bring In Plants
Did you know that certain plants have been found to remove toxins from the air? Spider plants, for example, strip the air of xylene, while aloe plants get rid of benzene and formaldehyde, and gerber daisies combat trichloroethylene. There are a number of plants that naturally purify the air, so figure out which chemical compounds are within your home and which kind of plants will destroy them.
3. Use a Dehumidifier
Mold grows quickly in moist environments, so it will benefit you to crank up the dehumidifier when you feel the air getting sticky. Just be sure that you don’t overdo it by making the air too dry. For comfort and humidity control, we recommend keeping the humidity levels around 50 percent.
4. Turn On Your Fans
Fans are important to keep the air circulating. Use ceiling fans when you’re cleaning; use exhaust fans when you’re cooking; use box fans when you need to cool down after a workout. When utilized consistently, fans and air conditioners can be a one-two punch against stale or impure air.
5. Vacuum Regularly
Vacuuming does more than simply keeping your carpets clean. It also sucks up dirt, dust, and dander that accumulates chemicals, contaminants, and allergens, and this, in turn, improves your air quality. For best results, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
