Fan Facts: 3 Things to Know About Ceiling Fan
July 28, 2014
During these hot months we are all trying to find ways to stay cool while not running up the electricity bill. Many find that adding a ceiling fan to their home can do just this. While it can’t replace your HVAC system, a well placed ceiling fan can help reduce your overall utility bill every month. When purchasing a new ceiling fan, here are a few shopping tips to keep in mind:
1. Size Matters
When first deciding what fan to buy, keep in mind the size of the room it’s going in. The bigger the room, the bigger the fan you’ll need. A small fan will not be able to circulate enough air in a large room, while a large fan in a small room will look strange and out of place. Follow this handy guide created by the American Lighting Association to determine what size fan will best fit your needs.
Room | Suggested Fan Size |
Bathroom, hallways up to 50 sq. ft. | 29” Blade Span |
Breakfast Nooks, Laundry rooms up to 75 sq. ft. | 36” Blade Span |
Small Bedrooms up to 100 sq ft. | 42” Blade Span |
Standard Bedrooms, Family Rooms, Kitchens up to 400 sp. ft. | 50” Blade Span |
Great Rooms over 400 sp. ft. | 54” or Larger Blade Span |
2. The Height of Comfort
Where you place your fan is just as important as it’s size. For ideal comfort and circulation, it is best to place the fan in the middle of the room, about 8 to 9 feet above the floor. Most ceiling fans come with a mounting kit to fit standard height ceilings. However, if your ceiling is around 12 to 14 feet, you will need to hang the fan on a long stem to get it closer to the floor. For ceilings more than 14 feet, it is best to hang the fan around 3 feet from the ceiling.
3. Keep it Moving
No one likes a noisy ceiling fan. That’s why it’s important to invest in a fan with a high quality motor. Not only does the motor keep your fan’s blades moving and air circulating, it is responsible for the sound the fan produces. A high quality motor is a must, as it will operate efficiently and quietly. Try finding a fan with sealed bearings that are permanently lubricated and heavy-duty windings. This will keep your room quiet and cool.
