What Does SEER Mean?
August 29, 2013
Residents of Florida realize the importance of an efficient air conditioner in providing quality of life. Electricity costs will always be increasing. Compared with models manufactured in the 1970s, new air conditioners use 30 to 50 percent less electricity.
Air conditioner technology has advanced remarkably in the last 10 years. Owners who replace their old air conditioner may save 20 to 40 percent on their cooling costs.
Air conditioning and heating pump efficiency is determined by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). It measures the relative amount of electricity required to produce a certain degree of cooling. Older systems had a 6 or under SEER ratings.
Today’s minimum SEER rating that is allowable by AC standards is 13. The SEER rating of the highest-efficiency models is 23. The previous minimum SEER rating allowed was 10. In practical terms, this raised the efficiency by 30 percent.
Sizing is very important in achieving efficient cooling of your home. If the air conditioner is too large, the humidity will not be reduced to a comfortable range. A unit that is too small will not cool sufficiently on hot days. Units with a SEER rating of less than 13 may be used as long as repair parts are available.
There are many good reasons to service your air conditioner at least every six months. A dirty air filter cannot pass enough air to cool your house properly. This means the air conditioner will run longer and use more electricity. The air will contain more dust and allergens. Mold spores create a truly unhealthy environment.
Regular maintenance will save money on electricity and extend the life of your air conditioning system.
