Protect Your Family Against the Health Risks of Poor Indoor Air Quality in Charlotte
The Center For Disease Control has established 3 Danger Levels of Indoor Air Pollution (see infographic). One Hour Heating & Air of Charlotte can install an Indoor Air Quality package to protect your family from these health risks.
Why Treat Your Indoor Air?
- Allergens: Dust, pollen, dander, mold spores, and yes: even dust mite feces. These agents are notorious for triggering allergies and irritating sensitive sinuses and reducing indoor air quality in Charlotte.
- VOC’s—Volatile Organic Compounds: VOC’s are both manmade and naturally occurring. While they are not toxic, they place anyone exposed to them over time at risk of health complications.
- Germs: Bacteria and viruses. Especially during flu season, the quality of your air can shift dramatically overnight.
FAQ
Q: Where do I find my air filter?
A: Your air filter is either located in a wall-mounted return air grille, the blower compartment of your furnace, or in an attached filter case. If you cannot find the air filter, call One Hour for help
Q: How can I improve the quality of my home’s indoor air?
A: There are several steps you can take everyday to reduce the pollutants and particles circulating in your home’s air. Some easy (and quick) methods include:
- Storing your household cleaners, chemical products and paint solvents in tightly sealed containers. If possible, keep them out of the house in a garage or shed.
- Cleaning and vacuuming once a week, at least.
- Regularly washing your bed linens and stuffed toys.
- Keeping your windows closed when pollen, pollution, or humidity levels are high. You can find this information from your local news station.
- Making sure your home is properly ventilated. (Modern homes are well insulated and sealed to conserve energy, but this leaves airborne pollutants with no way to escape).
- Keeping humidity levels within a healthy, comfortable range to prevent growth of mold and mildew (humidity levels should stay between 30% – 60%).
- Avoiding deodorizers and odor-masking air fresheners, which may contain toxic chemicals.
- Choosing furnishings that emit the smallest possible amount of chemical vapors.
- Do not allow smoking inside your home and make sure all of your gas appliances are properly vented.
Q: How often does my Air Filter need to be replaced?
A: The answer to this question depends on a couple of factors. The frequency of filter replacements is driven by how often your heating and air conditioning system operates, which is determined by how you set your thermostat. A good rule of thumb is to start checking the filters at least once a month. Compare the used filter to a new, clean, one to get a feel for how dirty the filter becomes. When light is obscured by captured particles, the filter should be replaced. Try keeping a record of how long your filters last for one year, then replace the filter using this basis. At a minimum, it is always a good idea to change filters at the beginning of summer and winter, then keep an eye on the filter to change it out as needed. It is also a good idea to have your heating and air system checked at the beginning of the hot and cold seasons to insure all parts are operating properly.
