Maintenance You Can Do to Keep Your HVAC System Healthy
December 27, 2017
The HVAC maintenance you perform on your Baton Rouge heating and cooling equipment is as important as the maintenance performed by a professional. Working together as a team, you and your service technician can keep your air conditioner, heat pump or furnace in high-performance mode all year long.
Keep the Area Around the Outdoor Unit Clean
Once every month, check the outdoor unit of your heat pump or air conditioner to ensure that it’s on a flat, level surface. Clear away twigs, leaves or other debris and cut foliage to at least three feet away. Gently rinse the unit with a garden hose, and wipe it dry with a soft cloth to remove dirt and grit.
Replace the Air Filters Promptly
Dirty filters can destroy your heat pump, air conditioner or furnace. Most air filters should be changed quarterly, but you might need to change them more often if you have pets. A clogged filter in an air conditioner or heat pump can make the motor overheat and cause the unit to shut down. When it turns back on, the same thing will happen; the result is a short-cycling system. Repeated short-cycling can damage the motor. A dirty filter could also cause your AC to freeze up and stop working. Dirty furnace or AC filters can also fill your Baton Rouge home with airborne contaminants.
Make an Annual HVAC Maintenance Appointment
Get heaters serviced in fall and air conditioners tuned up in spring. Your service technician will identify any issues that need be addressed to prevent problems in the future. Your tech will then clean the unit, calibrate the controls, lubricate all moving parts and test and tighten the electrical connections. Your technician will also check the refrigerant levels, thermostat settings, blower components and the condensate drain as well as checking the gas or oil connections on heaters for any safety issues.
