What’s the Average Life Expectancy of a New Furnace?
February 16, 2019
There are so many tasks and worries to consider when you own a home. You’re not alone, though. You have local technicians who are more than happy to help keep your house in tip-top shape. One such way in which experts can help is by determining when your furnace requires replacement. There are a few signs that indicate the life expectancy of your home’s furnace is coming to an end.
Average Lifespan of a Furnace
On average, a brand-new furnace installed by a professional in your home (that is well-maintained and repaired promptly) should last anywhere from 15 to 20 years. However, if your furnace does not receive proper maintenance, the occasional tune-up, and regular cleaning services, you can expect its overall lifespan to decrease by years. Having a furnace die randomly is one of the most inconvenient problems a homeowner can experience. It’s especially uncomfortable during the winter when you rely on a functioning heating system to keep everyone warm and safe. Thankfully, there are a few signs to indicate that your furnace is failing before it’s too late.
Signs of a Dying Furnace
As a homeowner, you should know of the following signs and what they mean for your home’s furnace system.
- Age – First and foremost, the age of your furnace will determine when replacement is likely. Your furnace should last up to 20 years. If your furnace is getting up there, it might be time to consider a replacement.
- Noises – Your furnace may make a few noises on occasion, but most often, your furnace should run quietly. If you start to hear a banging, popping, or squealing sound, then something is wrong. It may be a sign that the unit is starting to die.
- Burner Flame – Every now and then, visually inspect your furnace and its surroundings. One area to thoroughly examine is the burner flame, but do so carefully. If you notice the flame is yellow rather than blue, then chances are your furnace is producing carbon monoxide. You’ll want to call a technician immediately.
- Thermostat – If you find yourself messing with the settings on the thermostat frequently to find a comfortable temperature, then it might not be the thermostat causing a problem. Your furnace may be unable to properly distribute warm air throughout the house. You’ll also notice cold patches in certain rooms or areas of the house on occasion.
