Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?
April 20, 2019
There are few things worse than a hot afternoon without any cool breezes or AC. If your home’s air conditioning system is on the fritz again, you need a solution pronto. Many air conditioning issues just require a simple fix. Often, the air conditioning unit needs a new air filter or to be topped-up with refrigerant. There are cases where your air conditioning is blowing warm air all day. This makes the scorching temperatures even worse. A residential air conditioning system has numerous moving parts that need to work properly for the entire system to function. When one part fails, the entire system has trouble keeping up.
Common AC Problems Causing Warm Air
There are a number of common air conditioning problems that may lead to warm air blowing from your system.
Refrigerant Leak
One of the most common causes of a malfunctioning air conditioning system is a refrigerant leak. You’re not likely not going to see the leak yourself. If the system does leak, it will empty quickly and your system will struggle to produce cool air for the entire house. The result is warm air blowing from the unit.
Frozen Unit
Perhaps a surprise to many homeowners, an air conditioning system can freeze during any season of the year. A frozen air conditioner is a common cause of hot air flowing from the system. Most often, the frozen portion is the evaporator coil, which may block cooled air from entering the home. Instead, the heat from the motor is pushed through the system and out of your air ducts.
Thermostat Settings
Some homeowners forget to alter the settings on their thermostat to “cool” instead of “warm” when summer temperatures roll around. Additionally, your children may accidentally hit the thermostat controls. The unit will then begin blowing warm air to maintain the set temperature.
Air Filter
If you cannot remember the last time you changed your air conditioner’s air filter, then it’s probably time to do so. A dirty air filter can lead to a blockage in the system, which will require a technician to clean and replace. The filter alone will not lead to warm air blowing from the unit. It does, however, contribute to other issues and reduce the effectiveness of the system as a whole.
