How a Home Generator Works

Home Generator Power Source
Generators are a great investment especially if you live in an area that is prone to power outages. A generator replaces the electricity to your home in the event of a power outage. Generators are not powered by the electric company. They are powered by alternative fuel methods such as gas, diesel, propane and oil. Some generators are even powered by wind turbines and solar panels. No matter how a generator is powered, they all work the same way. When your power goes out, the generator kicks on to power your essential systems.
A home generator is generally not powerful enough to power all of your home’s appliances. Hence, when you install a generator, you’ll want to power only your essential items. Essential items include refrigerators, some lights, the stove, the hot water heater and washer and dryer. This is so that you can remain clean and fed with some lights until the power returns. Unless you have a large generator, it is not recommended that climate control systems be attached to the generator as those systems use a lot of power.
Here at Duggan's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning®, we can install and repair generators. If your generator is not functioning normally or at all, we can repair it. We can check the electrical system of the generator and all the moving parts. Once we determine the problem, we can replace those parts and test your generator to ensure it’s working properly.
