Leading home services company says now’s the time to prepare for summer heat
Expert HVAC technicians provide tips for home owners to prepare A/C units before summer arrives
HOUSTON (March 15, 2019) – Winter weather is waning, and spring time will rush into summer heat before we know it. Adding the below tips to your spring cleaning list can potentially reduce your energy usage and your electricity bill! Preparing your home air conditioning unit to run efficiently will not only save money and energy, but future headaches as well.
Experts from One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating ® urge home owners to pay attention to these must-do’s to help prepare their A/C units for warmer weather:
- Change the filter. This easy tip can have a big impact on the health of your HVAC system. A clean filter can reduce your energy usage by up to 15 percent according to Energy.gov. If your filter is temporary, replace it every month on a day you’ll remember, like the first of the month. If it’s a permanent filter, take it out and rinse it off monthly.
- Remove obstructions around your exterior system. Though the A/C is located outside your home, you cannot afford to sacrifice your air conditioner to the elements. Inspect the unit at least twice a month and remove loose vegetation or debris. Standing vegetation surrounding your air conditioner should not be allowed to grow within two feet of the unit. This clear zone allows your air conditioner to pull in the air it needs to control the temperature in your home.
- Clear the condensate drain. Air conditioners commonly have a condensate drain, or drainage hole, located at their cabinet’s base, beneath the evaporator fins. For your air conditioner to work effectively, this hole must be kept clear. While the hole may be too small for you to clean out manually, a paper clip or small piece of wire will do the trick.
- Schedule a tune-up. The easiest solution? Bring in the experts. Your local HVAC professional will be able to take a more detailed look at your system and identify problems you may have otherwise missed. Follow them around during their inspection and ask questions. You may just learn some insights that will be invaluable in your ongoing efforts to reduce your energy usage and total bill.
